As an institute of higher learning, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) has an immense and important responsibility in helping the gover1ment produce well-rounded individuals To achieve this objective, UNITEN has adopted several dynamic approaches which are implemented seriously and on a continuous basis. This includes ensuring that the curricula for all programmes are frequently revised to be parallel to and relevant to the needs of the market place. In iUr1 this will increase toe employability of UNITEN graduates.

Outcome Based Education is one of the programmes used by UNITEN to equip Engineering graduates with the basic knowledge and technical expertise required by the industry. Besides fulfilling the requirements set by the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council, this programme emphasises the continual quality and relevancy of its curriculum until the placement of UNITEN graduates in the market. During UNITEN's Convocation recently, 20 engineering students were offered jobs with PETRONAS while others were accepted by SHELL, Schlumberger, Esso, Sony, Carrier, Malakoff, Price Waterhouse, KPMG and Ernst &Young. Research statistics also indicate that 70% of UNITEN's graduates were approached by the industry before every convoca ion.

On the other hand, graduates who wish to further their studies to postgraduate level will find that they are readily accepted by local and international universities. These include UK universities like Cambridge, Imperial College, UMIST, Liverpool, Cranfield, Bristol, Warwick and Manchester; Nagoya University in Japan; New South Wales University in Australia; and Western Ontario University in Canada.

Besides focusing on academic excellence, UNITEN also emphasizes non-academic excellence that allows the assessment of mental agility and endurance, as well as physical strength With support from TNB and Malaysia's Rowing Association (PERDAMA), the 2nd UNITEN Rowing Invitation 2006 was organised at Putrajaya Water Sports Complex. This event which is held yearly vias highly successful and included participants from Sri Lanka and Singapore universities. YB Dato' Mustapa Mohamed graciously officiated the prize gi~ing ceremony.

UNITEN also gives primary focus on research and development activities which encourage and develoo the culture ofinnovaiion and competition among the academic staff as well as its students. Strateg;c cooperation between UNITEN and the industrial sector provides access and opportunities for students and academic staff to masrer knowledge as well as scientific. technical expertise that are congruent with industrial and market place needs. In the recent International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design and Technology Exhibition 2006 (!TEX 2006) competition, UNITEN won three gold medals.
