Texas Woman's offers online nursing master's degree

Texas Woman's University's College of Nursing has launched a complete online master's degree program for nurses wanting a career in education.

The Denton, Texas-based college said the program will begin in the fall and spring semesters.

"The online M.S. in nursing education program puts TWU in a very competitive position to recruit outstanding nurses who want to become educators," said Dr. Pat Holden-Huchton, associate dean of the TWU College of Nursing in Denton. "TWU will also benefit by providing a very real solution to both the nursing shortage and the nursing faculty shortage in Texas and the nation."

About 75 percent of the 178,000 unfilled hospital positions nationally are for nurses, according to the American Hospital Association. Federal projections are that registered nurse employment opportunities are expected to grow faster through 2008 than the average for all other occupations. Some Texas projections are that demand in the state will outstrip supply into 2010 or later.

In Texas, professional registered nursing is the largest health care profession, according to the Texas Nursing Association. Nearly 148,000 RNs reside in Texas and 114,000, or 77 percent, are employed in nursing practice.

Of that number, TNA said 61 percent are employed at hospitals, while only 1.9 percent hold an educational position.

TWU's online MS in nursing education is a 36-hour program that is completed entirely online over three semesters and is available through its Denton, Dallas and Houston campuses.

The school received $714,000 over two years from the Texas Legislature online nursing education program. The funds will be used for stipends to recruit students.

Stipends of $30,000 are available for Texas residents accepted to the program who are full-time graduate students taking 12 credit hours each semester and who commit to teach full-time in an accredited nursing program in a Texas state-supported university or community college for two years after graduating.

Bush leads aides on 3-mile run despite 100+ degree heat

CRAWFORD, Texas -- The temperature topped 100, sweaty degrees on Wednesday at President Bush's ranch in Crawford – a fine day for a three-mile run.

Forty White House staffers, members of the military and Secret Service gathered at a starting line and took off running.

Kenya: Varsity Don Pursues a Degree of Charity

Prof Dan Owino Kaseje's triple achievements as a university don, medical doctor and ordained priest could symbolise the three stars that led the wise men from the East to Jerusalem.

A university that is his brainchild in western Kenya is the focal point of the country's oldest and arguably most celebrated scholars seeking to impart knowledge to the younger professionals away from the mainstream universities.

Aged between 60 and 80 years, the scholars, who once earned Nyanza Province the epithet "citadel of elitism," have teamed up to start a university near their homes, perhaps inspired by the three wise sayings: old is gold, east or west, home is best and experience is the best teacher. From its name, the Great Lake University of Kisumu boasts a collection of the country's most celebrated academicians.

The chancellor, Prof David Wasawo, was the first black African to get a First Class honours at Oxford University, the first black East African to teach at Makerere University and the first African professor in East and Central Africa.

It is believed that he was to be the first black Kenyan vice-chancellor of the University of Nairobi, but the late Dr Josephat Njuguna Karanja caught the eyes of the late President Jomo Kenyatta.

Now Prof Wasawo is the head of Gluk, shorthand for Grate Lake University of Kisumu, with a unique staff of grey-haired men. Most celebrated was the late Prof A B C Ocholla Ayayo, but in his cohorts remain Prof Walgio Orwa, Prof Owino Okong'o and Prof John Kokwaro, among others

Gluk emerged from the ashes of war as the Constituent University College of Great Lakes University of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prof Kaseje, a humble Anglican Church of Kenya priest, dropped out of Maranda High School in the 1960s due to lack of fees, earning him many years in various primary schools. But his dedication has given western Kenya its first private, or community university as he calls it, with a touch of philanthropy.

"It is a community university because it was formed to pull the community out of health disasters through public health education. I also don't own it but the community contributes funds locally to develop a sense of need and ownership. Membership is open to all, " he said in an interview.

New lease of life

He is the vice-chancellor who, 10 years ago, started the Tropical Institute of Community Health (Tich), an acronym for work in Dholuo, to bring change in public health for which Nyanza had earned a bad reputation. All the tags like cholera, HIV/Aids, famine, poor latrine coverage and repugnant cultures trail the province. Now the Great Lakes University of Kisumu is putting on a shine after confronting the reality here, giving Kisumu a new lease of life. Gluk recently hosted an international HIV/Aids conference through Sahara, at which even doctors infected with HIV, the virus that causes Aids, found reason to break their silence.

Prof Kaseje founded the Great Lakes University of Kisumu on the clamour to fight HIV/Aids, which has widely spread in Nyanza over the last two decades. It's as if he was born to work his way up and help people trapped in poverty, ignorance and disease. Even learning through five primary schools in three districts as he sought assistance from relatives and an interrupted secondary education could not stop his quest.

Tich was coined as an education centre for research and working with communities to combat health problems. Prof Kaseje was touched by the plight of students drawn from the troubled Great Lakes countries like DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.

After retiring from the International Federation of Red Cross, the World Council of Churches, the University of Nairobi and other high-level positions, he decked his priestly collar and raised the red flag against disasters.

His experience in management by crisis seasoned him for what he is up against now. Prof Kaseje evacuated students from the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo's Great Lakes University of Goma 10 years ago to a peaceful academic environment at the shores of Lake Victoria in Kisumu, instantly transforming the lives of many paramedics to become leading African peacekeepers through health and humanitarian services.

Kisumu provided a constituent college for the GLUG, located on the lava-washed city of Goma on Lake Kivu. An integration programme that included the admission of Kenyan public health and nurses with certificates and diplomas, changed the core functions of paramedics known for just shuttling between messy hospitals and markets, dealing with opportunistic diseases and consulting for HIV/Aids projects.

Prof Kaseje says public health officials and nurses in Kenya were blocked from becoming the "cream of the nation," as university graduates were referred to in those days since doctors were the only feted professionals in the medical field. Its core degrees were launched at a conference that brought together African countries through the Sahara (Social Aspects of HIV/Aids and Health Research Alliance), Universities in Solidarity with Disadvantaged Communities (Unisol, funded by Unesco) at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu.

Unisol aims to help paramedical professionals to grow into social health experts who can handle the challenges of HIV/Aids, wars, trauma and cultural impediments to economic and health provisions. Great Lakes University of Kisumu took over from Tich and will offer undergraduate and post-graduate education.

Prof Kaseje told the first graduands to "go out there and work very hard," in line with Tich's in the local dialect. "I believe in hard work because of my very poor background," says the Harvard-trained scholar. "I had to change primary schools to get my education and stayed with relatives when it became difficult for my parents."

Juris doctor degree grows in popularity

THE University of Technology, Sydney has restructured its law degree offerings, relaunching its master of law and legal practice qualification as a juris doctor of law.

The move follows news of radical plans at the University of Melbourne, which has introduced a more American style of learning.

Under the "Melbourne model" reforms, it will no longer accept undergraduate law students as of next year. Rather, students will have to complete a different undergraduate degree before gaining a Melbourne juris doctor.

The University of Notre Dame's Sydney campus is also introducing a juris doctor course next year, and Monash University, the University of New England, the University of Queensland and the University of Canberra also offer the JD.

At Notre Dame, classes are held on week nights and weekends, aimed at those already working.

Bronwyn Olliffe, UTS's associate dean of teaching and learning in the faculty said the master of law and legal practice - the first of its kind when launched seven years ago - had been redesigned because of internal research that found some students did not wish to go on and complete their practical legal training - compulsory under the MLLP.

"Students are looking for the fastest way to get to the end of a degree," Ms Olliffe said.

The course would now be six months shorter, and with fewer credit points the cost would also be reduced. The name change was partly a reflection of the growing market in juris doctor degrees.

"The name juris doctor is something recognised more internationally," Ms Olliffe said.

"I think this is something we will see spreading further in Australia."

Online course helps laity manage parishes

Before she became the business manager of a Catholic parish, Elaine Herald was the service director for a company that installed entertainment systems.

"It was totally different -- and almost the same," she said of the comparison between a cable company and the Catholic Church. In both she dealt with people and contracts and equipment -- but the expectations were different.

Ms. Herald, 57, the parish manager of St. Theresa in New Cumberland, Cumberland County, in the Diocese of Harrisburg, helped design a new online master's degree program for parish managers at Duquesne University. Classes begin this fall.

"It's a really solid program," she said. "Whoever comes out of that program will be able to come into a parish and feel at least somewhat confident that they have the tools to marry with the experience that will come along."

In an effort to free priests for pastoral duties, many dioceses urge parishes to hire lay managers for administration. They are different from the lay ministers or "parish life collaborators" who oversee pastoral care in a parish without a resident priest.

Although the Diocese of Pittsburgh just installed its first parish life collaborator last month, Duquesne's theology department has for many years offered a master's degree in pastoral ministry, to train laity for that role. But while the diocese has been urging parishes to hire business managers for at least 15 years, no degree program existed until a chance conversation between a priest and Dorothy Bassett, dean of Duquesne's School of Leadership and Professional Advancement.

The Rev. Timothy Hickey, Duquesne's director of mission and identity, was speaking of the growing shortage of priests, and how laity had to be prepared to assume professional leadership roles in parishes. She saw an opening for a new concentration in her school's master of science in community leadership degree. Soon they were consulting with pastors and parish managers to design the degree program.

Dr. Bassett was amazed when she read job descriptions from many parishes and dioceses.

"You would practically have to be Superman to take some of this stuff on," she said.

"They want someone with a background in human resources management, who knows both civil and canon law; someone with budget management experience who can work with boards and oversee a school and do cemetery management and construction project management. The scope was incredible," she said.

Salaries vary so widely, depending on the size of the parish and the willingness of some retired business people to accept token payment, that the Diocese of Pittsburgh has no recommended salary range, said Sister Pat Rogan, director of the diocesan Institute for Ministries. The typical full-time business manager here makes $30,000 to $50,000 she said, "but there may be some lower and some higher."

Although the Duquesne program began with Catholics in mind, everything but the canon law is applicable to other religious traditions. Those who do congregational management for other traditions are welcome to enroll, Dr. Bassett said.

Classes range from "Leadership Effectiveness" to parish fund raising to civil and canon law, to use of information technology in a modern parish. A class on community service explores how to organize social services, such as a food pantry.

All classes are online. Students interact with the professor and each other through threaded discussion groups. It is solely an online degree because Dr. Bassett expects current parish managers to enroll.

"Their schedules are so busy that to ask them to come in for a face-to-face class is unrealistic," she said.

First online masters degree awarded

Hibernia College, which specialises in web-based learning, held a ceremony for the 27 students at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) in Dublin.

The MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine is a collaboration between Hibernia and pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and run in conjunction with the RCSI and Harvard University, Boston, in the US.

The study-from-home programme attracted two graduates from the UK and 16 from the US while others came from countries across Europe and as far afield as Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, India, Malaysia and Taiwan.

Only 16 of the 27 graduates were able to attend the ceremony.

Dr Sean Rowland, president of Hibernia College, said: "(This) marks the culmination of two years of hard work by both the students and the faculty involved and clearly establishes Hibernia as a global player in e-Learning.

"It also further underlines Ireland's international reputation as a provider of high-quality, innovative education."

Pfizer management also praised the students for their work and country manager David Gallagher said they had played a major part in pioneering new forms of higher education.
